A letter to Penang Venerable Monk Bhaddanta PanñavamsaA letter to Penang Venerable Monk Bhaddanta Panñavamsa
You have a reputation at home and abroad for your brilliant performance in missionary services outside Myanmar. May I supplicate on some points to you. I have learnt that there has been formed an international Sangha organization “ Sasana Otshaung” as a symbol of a movement of Myanmar monk abroad. I have learnt that the abbot of Masoeyein Monastery works as Otshaung Monk of the organization, and Penang Monk, as Chairman. I was taken aback by and was worried about the formation of such a parallel Sangha organization despite the predominant massive organization of members of the Sangha in Myanmar. And there was widespread criticism about that among members of the Sangha in the country. That evoked my memories that you discharged religious duties in Wakema, your native town, for some years for the flourishing of the Sasana. Then, you resided in Aung Mingala Theikdi Monastery in Sangyoung, Yangon. After that, you, facing hardships, departed for Penang Island to carry out missionary duties, then you established branch monasteries in Singapore and in the US, and you preached to foreign lay persons, female and male, there. I hold you in great esteem for your missionary work. However, I learnt some comments from a Myanmar tourist, and what he said to me was just a bitter pill to swallow for me. It feel very downhearted to know that the comments were relevant to the fact that you are now residing in an apartment, instead of a monastic building, in Los Angles, the US, and getting involved in secular affairs. I would also like to supplicate on some facts about Maha Santi Suhka Missionary Training Centre. You Initiated a plan to establish a splendid training centre to be named “Maha Santi Sukha Missionary Training Centre” to train monks to install as abbots in the Myanmar monasteries around the world. However, the amount of the initial funds you set up was 70 million Kyats only, and that was just enough for decorations for the training centre. Yous monk disciples brought together with them some of the decorations and furniture When they left the training centre. The overall cost of the training centre was round about 1000 million kyats, so your contributions of materials and furniture towards the religious building accounted for very small part of the total cost. To build such a magnificent training centre was, in fact, a huge task. Later, you had to ask the government for some contributions. In response to your request, the government contributed some funds along with loans from some businessmen, and the loans from Yangon City Development Committee, and supervised the construction of the training centre. In that regard, the government’s efforts ranged from ownership of the government grant-land to the completion of the building. The ownership of the training centre thus went to the board of the trusteeships, not to you. In my opinion, your plan of doing business to earn money by lodging foreign visitors is against missionary services. Up to now, the debts for the training centre have not been settled yet. Like other religious universities in Myanmar, Maha Santi Sukha Missionary Training Centre is put Under the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, and it is a correct procedure. It is indeed, just a facility already donated for the Sasana. Therefore, it is the most appropriate that the building is under the management of the board of trusteeships, rather than under that of a single person. It is not true that the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee unjustly has seized and is manipulating the affairs of the training centre. To date, you have not been put on the margin of the management sector. And you may reside again in the training centre at any time if you want to. In spite of such a generous offer, you has failed to reside again in the training centre, and it is just your choice. I have learnt form a foreign news agency that you are not happy with the decision. I wish you were not criticizing the members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee on the basis of your dissatisfaction with the management of the training centre. I wish you a success in discharging missionary duties for the flourishing of Theravada Buddhism in accordance with the Teachings of the Buddha, after quitting the social and political affairs, in which you are getting involved now.
Truthfull,
A Lay disciple Truthfull, A Lay disciple
